Armagh v Cavan - Ulster Semi-final and Replay

My team for Sunday;

Hughes

Mc Kay, Charlie, Morgan

Shields (encouraged to carry ball and attack at pace as much as possible)

Forker, Kennedy, Hughes

Grimley, JOB, Crealey

Hall, Campbell (to link play and carry ball as much as possibly, the two hardest jobs on the pitch)

Jamie, Rian (both to stay inside 30m of the Cavan Goal to always have an out ball)

I believe that could still give us strength at the back and in numbers, the option to attack at pace, JOB more license to get forward with less defensive responsibilities than usual with Crealey there, a stronger midfield. It would only work however with quick transition and breaking at pace.

Time has come to drop Grugan

Nugent would be very unlucky to miss out, but with him/Murin/McElroy/O'Neill/Grugan to make an impact off the bench.

I believe on watching the game back, if Shields doesn't have to go and do a man marking job we would have won the game as he was causing a lot of problems first 20 mins.

I just hope we have a go at them from the throw in.

This team is better at driving at the opposition and getting the ball in early.

This possession based paranoid shite doesn't work for us. Throw caution to the wind and just go for it.

The more of this game that comes down to 1 to 1 battles the better. Stretch the game and dilute the impact of their defensive system. Move the ball forward quickly before they get the extra defenders back. If we hand pass the ball to midfield and then look for the forward kick pass its too late.

Don’t want to see hall, shields, grugan, Campbell, nugent and the midfielders all in the defensive blanket at the same time. Some of them need to looking for the first out ball and then look for that quick ball into Clarke and ONeill.

MOTM thoughts?

Having watched the game back a few times I thought Paul Hughes was Armaghs man of the match closely followed by Aidan Forker.

The two young lads who stole the show in Newry didn't do so to the same extent. O'Neill only shot 4 times in the 70 mins and scored 3 of them. A good return but the more shooting chances he gets the higher we score.

His free off the ground from outside the 45 was excellent.

Interestingly JOB won that free in the 42nd minute. JOB exchanged a one two with McElroy (just after the hour) and that was the only time he touched leather for the remainder of the game.

Grimley became more involved in that last half hour and he was the one tasked with McKiernan.

JOB had a very good 40 mins but was a bystander from the 42nd minute until the final whistle on 74 minutes.

A midfielder can't afford to go missing for that long in championship football.

Great to see Blaine Hughes look more assured. A couple of minor errors but did well.

Just checking, but you did notice that JOB scored 1-2, could have scored a goal in the early stages of the match & did take a nasty bang to the head in the 2nd half? For a young player who was only playing his 2nd senior county championship match I'd say he's doing alright.

Difficult to argue with that.

I never once said that he didn't have an excellent first 42 mins. My point is he was non-exsistant for the remaining 32.

During which time he went off with the head injury. There was even talk that he shouldn't have cone back on. I just feel it's understandable that his performance levels dipped.

His head injury was at the throw in at the beginning of ET. Thought I'd missed him going off in normal time. So your comment regarding his performance dipping from the 42nd minute up until the final whistle on 74 minutes had nothing to do with a head injury. An injury which he didn't come back on from in ET despite you stating in your post he did.

Jarly was lucky not to have two goals. They are going to have difficulty with him again on Sunday if he is fit to play. We have threats from MF all the way through to FF line. Then of course we have Shields and Forker who don't mind going out on a run and Morgan and McElroy have chipped in, in the last two games. With that being said, we just need management to perform and motivate the players.

What is important is that we don't concede or go behind in the same way Monaghan did. Cavan will suffocate any attack if they get ahead and if it stays close throughout the Cavan players will be stretched trying to contain the likes of Clarke, O'Neill, Murnin, Campbell, Burns, Grimley, Nugent etc. I would say Hall but I am still having reservations about him. He is ok running and attacking but when it comes to defending the Cavan defence seem to get past him with no problems.

Someone posted on the GAABoard that Armagh and Cavan have contested at least one final in every decade. For one of them that record ends on Sunday

Apologies, he obviously wasn't the only one took a bang to the head :D

Spoke to someone yesterday who said that they went to O'Kanes to get tickets and was told they were sold out! Surely not - does each outlet have a certain number or are they all drawing from the main pool? Either way I'd be amazed if all tickets were gone. can anyone enlighten me?
