Reposting this thread as the melodramatic nature of my last poll wasn’t appropriate for the forum. Thanks for @Admin1 for giving me a chance to restart the discussion in a more measured way.

So with 9 years with no notable silverware is it time to switch up management?

Also the county is also struggling at inter-county underage and our clubs can’t seem to compete successfully outside of Armagh. Do we need to refocus our resources back to grassroots?

Is there any radical reforms that need to be made to make the county as a whole more competitive?

Fair play to you.

Take a look at our club division setup

How many are in div 1,2,3 in each age group

All coaches should be at level 1 at underage within the next three years
Run compulsory workshops on the basic skills, running teams, managing teams etc
Upskill all our coaches

Coach the players
Get into the schools as well

S&C to be introduced and managed
It's about producing players for senior teams
Success at underage helps

It has to be sustainable though and required buy in from clubs and county together

Think the problem goes far deeper than one man in charge imo, looking at the success rates of our clubs, schools and underage teams something needs to change from the bottom up.

There was a document released by the county board last month.
'Armagh GAA Strategic Plan'
If you go onto the Armagh website it is available to download in pdf
Very well put together and addresses most of the points made above.
e.g. timetabled and structured coaches in all primary schools.
If they can implement half of what is in the document it will be a very good start.

I'm no expert on that but from reading and talking to others around 14 starting with body weight exercises and then progressing to weights as they get older. This would all include dietary advice such as fueling before and after sessions etc

Armagh GAA 5 Year Strategic Plan: For Club & County. Agree this is an excellent document and if implemented will be a great start to resolving some of our issues. Well done to all involved. Every club/county member, supporter etc should give it a read. (I randomly asked a couple of club members about it and they had never heard of it). Clubs need to make members aware of, what is after all, our strategy. Maybe have some copies on club premises where people could give it a read.

14 is a decent age I suppose. My 9 year old nephew mentioned needing a gym program one day and I thought surely they aren't talking about the gym for his age group. They weren't, he's just ahead of the curve haha

In my humble opinion, based solely on my own life experience and underage coaching I received, any ‘S&C’ for anyone under the age of 16 should be based around their ability to lift their own body weight and nothing more. I agree with JoeH above that due to kids no longer playing like we did when we were younger their natural strength and dexterity is not at the level that previous generations had however that does not mean you lump weights onto them.

Let kids develop naturally, build muscle organically around body exercises, old fashioned press ups, chin ups etc. This will help them develop their core at a consistent way to their body size. Then as they grow older introduce the weights programs. Maybe I’m old fashioned but ….

I agree. Should be little focus on s&c for under 16s - concentrate on ball skills, passing, running etc

Lol.. graham and O rouke where managers, they are not going to come in as number 2 or 3.

What did mc keever do so wrong your replacing him??

I'd rather they take over the manager role. But I don't think that is going to happen. I was just saying similar to mcgeeney when he took the role he came in as a coach. Maybe a good coach role for the lad from galway. Don't really have a problem with mckeever but I'd imagine Donaghey will be going. I think the backroom needs to be freshened up. Ideally I'd like to see all 3 go.

As this year's squad is effectively together the past 3years

2023 narrowly relegated but still relegated
Ulster final - beaten on penalties (should have won with the chances plus strange refereeing decisions)
Top of qualifying group
Beaten QF in penalties ( had enough chances to win)

2022 stayed in division 1
Knocked out 1st game of Ulster
Retired Michael Murphy in Clones
AI QF - played second fiddle most of game and dramatically salvaged a draw. Could have won in ET lost on penalties

2021 division 1
Can't remember Ulster championship
Can't remember AI series

Other years not so sure so if anyone has the info please update

Are we looking at frustration with results or style of play?
If someone has the above information and it's compiled into a table then we can chart and visually see what's been happening

I don't buy into time served.
Are we fixated with thinking history will repeat itself?
Are we progressing?
Are the best players with the squad?
Is the squad evolving to cope with retirements/ injuries etc?
Are we able to compete with the top teams compared to say five years ago?
Is there an underlying campaign against geezer? (Personally I believe there is for what reasons I do not why)
If there's a change:
Given the squad do we want a proven inter county manager - Jim Gavin, Malachy O'Rourke etc or are we content with those who are cutting their teeth at inter county?

Changing because of sound bites and social media experts is not just reason to change
It must be for the right reason - what's better for Armagh?

Beat by Monaghan. Don’t think there were qualifiers that year.

Hard to gauge the season considering the extra importance of the league - relegation certainly did not help. The ulster final appearance probably saved the season from suggestions we have regressed. The AIQF matches what was achieved last year. This year was only marginally better than the last - and arguably this QF should have been easier.

Other points to consider - and I know some point to success in club and at underage but Derry were a team in D4 not long ago, they have completely surpassed us in a much shorter time span. They have since won 2 Ulster's back to back; made a QF and SF appearance in the AI and promoted multiple times and are back playing D1.
