McKenna Cup 2024

Why is it an insult? If they put out a strong team there would be complaints.

These guys would be the next players coming in. Closed door challenges are one thing. A competitive game is something different.

The McKenna cup is a pre season competition - the business starts 27th January.

Good luck to all involved and safe travels
The thing is the majority of that team won't be anywhere near the fringes of the senior squad come the league.

I wonder will the senior panel be away playing a behind closed doors game
I heard they had a game last night against the dubs.... probably played 25/30 lads, hence the team tonight most likely. If management deem a behind closed doors game more important than showing any hand against a div 2 and ulster opponent, that's good enough for me....

If management feel playing in a preseason competition isn’t the best preparation for the league fair enough, the baffling thing is why field at all? Have they intentions of fielding a stronger team against Tyrone, if not just a waste of everyone’s time.

Prediction:
DL: 4-20
ARM: 0-02

I think the optics of pulling out wouldn't be great and more disrespectful than fielding an u20 side. U20 management must be happy enough and prob see it as a good chance to sort the men from the boys and see who stands up in what will be the face of adversity. For context, last year this team started against cavan;

Armagh: E Rafferty, G McCabe, A McKay, R Finn, C O’Neill (0-1), B McCambridge, J Óg Burns (0-1), S Campbell (0-1), S Sheridan, J Sheridan, C Cumiskey, T Kelly, R Grugan (0-3f), C Turbitt, A Nugent (0-2)

Although there was 11 subs made at half time, we only scored one score the entire second half and this place was up in arms. a few comments;

can safely say we are worse off now after that game. New players need to be blended in to the team along with the experienced so they can learn from them. If I were one of the new batch that came on at HT I would now be thinking I'm miles away instead of building my confidence. How can any team make so many changes and expect to retain the flow of the game.
I'm not normally this critical but this was a very stupid decision by the management.
As for learning from the competition, we got zero. Very, very disappointed and annoyed.
By the way, McGeeney does need to take supporters into consideration, if it wasn't for us he would not be in a job. The Armagh support goes a long way to help the team.

That was terrible, very bad management decision to put out so many subs at a time.
What did they learn from that nothing!! Poor lads no leaders! They learn from the experience played! And they were on the bench. A draw would have ment so much more to the young players.
Disappointed in the management decision

Shocking decision from management. McKenna cup game where spectators have travelled to and paid to watch and they decide to pull that stunt. Surely intercounty friendlies is the time and place to ‘give players a run’ where it’s behind closed doors. Paid a 10er to watch on tv and feel scamed, can’t imagine those who travelled a hour down the road on a cold wet January feel.

This year they have saved everyone a trip in advance, think of the fuel and ticket savings :)
Point is, dammed if ya do dammed if ya don't. Its only a preseason friendly comp, and maybe they've been working on new things and don't want to show their hand, something the u20s wont be privy too. Same old thing this time every year, people need to relax. Business starts end of the month.

Might only be the McKenna cup but great to see opinions on here are at full strength if not the team. Could see similar happening in the future in Ulster the way that is going too.

Appreciate this is mainly an u20 team but hope senior management are present and visible on the sideline. Would have preferred some more experienced heads with them to aid development though and ensure even a heavy defeat doesn't set them back.

These young lads will be buzzing at representing Armagh at senior level no matter what and good luck to them!

They play the dubs regularly, a good side to prepare against,

Tonight’s fixture obviously doesn’t suit whatever training schedule is in place, hence the effective forfeit. Bit disappointing for us lot hungry for some county action, but not much to be bothered about in the greater scheme of things.

These pre-season competitions have been on the way out for a while. Think a few counties messed about in the Leinster competition last year, maybe even withdrawing altogether mid-competition. Fulfilling the fixture, even with a round up of young lads, probably a better optic than just withdrawing like that.

Reckon the lads lining out will be thrilled even if they end up receiving a tanking. They’ll know they’re on a complete hiding to nothing, so there’ll be no tears or devastation whatever happens. Good opportunity to really push themselves and to have a bit of craic on a January evening.

Looks like we’ll just have to wait until the end of the month for some real county football.

Well we've scored more than you predicted so that's a good start.

I am baffled by this selection.

Regardless of who is in the wider panel, there are fringe players who need games to be able to push. We have a number of guys in no man's land now who seem to basically just operate as squad players with no option to ever see game time other than the talked about in house games or closed door challenge games.

The team named has players who don't start for their club senior teams but yet are being trusted to start a senior inter county match. Regardless of what your stance on the selection, surely you need to be starting for your club senior side before starting for the county senior team, regardless of the competition etc. I would be fairly confident that if you asked the fringe players who aren't getting a chance they would bite your arm off for a start.

If Armagh don't want to treat the competition seriously then don't enter it, stick with in house games and challenge games but don't make a mockery of it.

Fairly sure Donegal fielded their U20s in the McKenna Cup under Bonner a few years back, so we wouldn't be the first to be making "a mockery" if the competition

They weren't disgraced, Luke McKeever might well be seen in an Orange jersey for some time to come.

I seem to recall us fielding a U-21 team 20 years ago against Down when the team were off somewhere warm. We beat them, which was nice.

Really feel for the lads tonight - there should be at least 1 experienced player on each line to support the players trying to make an impact. Definitely an 'experience' for them tonight.
Yeah the where competitive enough in the first half but once paddy carr went off they last all shape I feel, it's a shame as they look like they need some experience to settle them, score will get ugly I'd say now, this can dent this team going forward
