I think we should take every opportunity to get our best team on the field, playing together and building up a game plan that will see us being successful later in the season. It's the first game of the league and we can't be complacent. We need to start well and put down a marker. We can bring some of the wider squad on during this game if we're going well and can afford to do so. There will be other games in the league where we can play some wider squad members. I'd only ever start four or five of these players outside of our best 15, otherwise the intensity and cohesion can drop quickly.

We were terrible for the most part in the league last season and carried some of this terrible play into the Championship. We should look to build momentum from the off. With tough away games to Kildare and Cork, we can't be in a position we're we've dropped easy points, which could cost us promotion. Ourselves, Donegal, Cork and Kildare will all have designs on getting promoted, so we can't slip up earlier.

I can understand why people would think that, but the new structure of the championship means if safe in division 2 you should tail of and time a run to get deeper into the championship, just have to look at Rossie's and mayo who are a similar level to us, started off flying and then by start of the all Ireland series where nowhere near it, I feel we need to mind the lads that are over 30 as much as possible while easing the guys coming back from injury into the squad, there isn't much between the bottom 4 in div 1 and top 4 in div 2, so as long as we are in the all Ireland series I'd try and peak for it not the league

I agree and I think promotion is massive for us as we want to be exposed to the best teams as much as possible.

Having said that I’d be raging if Forker/Murnin or one of the other older lads that are going to be vital come championship did a hamstring in a league game. Also the only way we’ll develop the likes of McConville and McGrane and the other young lads is if we give them meaningful games and division 2 is obviously going to be easier for them to develop than division 1.

Mayo did the same a few years back with O'Donoghue and Conroy and a few others played them in division 2, we know what the older lads can do, so keep them fresh for uster and all ireland championship, play the younger lads in the league and we will see if they are up to it or not

I dont think there is a hard and fast rules when it comes to the older brigade. Some of them will need to keep active and play as many games as possible to keep ticking over and other will be able to get fit in 6 to 8 weeks so they should be aiming to peak for the last rounds of the league. This is why there is and where sports science comes in and they are the ones who will read the stats and crunch the numbers and advise management on the best approach for each individual... this is when they earn their bucks!!

That's potentially good coverage in general of the league which rebounds on the season ticket issue. Unless you were an absolute ardent attendee at games get your bits frozen because it bates watching Fr. Ted - at this point I apologise to habitual game goers @ragingbull and @PatMustard for bursting the bubble that not everyone attends almost all games (a club I'm always in).

This time of year it's definitely harder to get motivated as I approach another birthday. This time the 27th one and the auld bones just can't handle it the same. Being in Croke Park at the weekend just reminded me how important it is to have those great big stadium heaters on full tilt to get out in the jersey!

Say nahin @ragingbull . That big Fermanagh glipe “youngster” can’t prove that it was us that did, whatever it is he’s accusing us of.

I'm not saying that the older players need to play every minute. Probably should have been clearer. I think there will have to be games where we play close to our best team, whether it's to win a key match or get game time together. I wouldn't be advocating flogging them to death between now and Championship. There could be games which we lose because we don't play our best players, this will cause frustration and there will be people coming on here saying that McGeeney is a fool for not playing players X, Y and Z. But if he's trying to keep key players fresh and injury free, then that's the sacrifice he'll need to make. It's going to be a fine balance between getting promotion, the team finding form and managing the minutes of players throughout the squad.

I think we generally struggle when it comes to trying to manage games. Whether that be seeing a tight game out or even planning when to peak which is made harder with the current season set up. We are at our best when we don't over think it and just go out to win.

With the squad we have there should be more than enough quality to add 3 or 4 of the recovering or peripheral players who have been pushing. That way new players can learn from established ones. If a game is well in control we can mix the experienced with several more new players who can come on for a good run as subs. Everyone who is training will want to play.

I'm developing the opinion promotion would mean more to future development than an Ulster.....that is until it starts and given our draw it might be the more achievable target and who knows what confidence a trophy brings.

I don't think there is any one size fits all approach to the league/championship with the current structure.

You can look at the like of Mayo and Roscommon who had very strong starts and hit the ground running, but ended up getting dumped out quite timidly come the later knock out stages.

Although on the contrary, you can look at Derry, who treated each game in division 2 as a chance to get fit and work and perfect their style of play and game plan. They were a kick of the ball away from the All-Ireland final.

Me personally would like to see us take the approach of Derry. Realistically these league games will be the only proper challenges we get before a potential Ulster final. No disrespect to Down and Fermanagh, but they are well below power. We need to be polished for Donegal/Derry in an Ulster final.
