Anyone else see the Armagh v Kerry all Ireland semi from 2000 on TG4 the other night? I was shocked at the quality, it was woeful. Long aimless kick passing which were invariably cut out by both defenses. The tackling was on a whole different planet too, I'd say there would have been about 500 yellow cards if it were nowadays. A totally different game and one that I did not remember even though this was the era I played in. You can see why the game has changed, it was just a free for all, strewn with unforced errors. The modern game may have evolved a bit too much but it simply had to.
Another game I've never watched cause we lost

No, but I was watching the Armagh v Meath semi-final from 1999 on YouTube the other day and like you, was taken aback by how poor a lot of it was. Whenever the ball was won, it was just launched up the field in the general direction of the forwards who were left to battle it out for the ball. Some of it was awful! The game has changed and certainly progressed in a lot of areas. The mass defences, slow build up and cynical play we see now don't help the game as a spectacle.

I would have been the same Niall. If you get a chance look it up. It was also very interesting that it was pre Armagh hate fest as the referee (john Bannon) was very kind to us and my memory was to the contrary. Even Martin Carney on commentary was highly complimentary of our style of play. Where did it all go wrong!! Just goes to show how inaccurate the old memory can be.
Complementary at that time probably because we had not yet won anything at a national level at that point. Once we won the All Ireland, the begrudgery started to appear but went up several levels with the emergence of Tyrone. Irish News lead the way as Red Hand cheerleaders, painting us as the big bad wolves with a game-plan totally built on physicality and playing 'close to the edge' with Tyrone all about pure football, captained by the greatest player to ever play the sport and most likeable human being to grace Planet Earth.

The 2000 semi final replay is on youtube. We really should have won that if we had shown a bit more adventure after going 5 points up. McConville was superb that day.
Brian White was referee that day and was about to book Tomas O Se before obviously changing his mind when realizing O'Se was already on a yellow card. Kerry had identified Cathal O Rourke from the drawn game as an important playmaker and Tomas O'Se had been battering him from before throw-in.

Watched the Orchard Harvest recently - great days. 2002 must have been one of the most competitive ever, some serious competition in each province that year!! Tipp, Cork, Limerick, Kerry, Sligo, Galway, Mayo, Dublin, Kildare, Offaly, Meath, Tyrone, Donegal, Ourselves - really great teams and all very competitive!

In fact it's true the his parents were never married!!
Ah now Pablo! I know you're being facetious (you damn well better be ;)) but did you really have to type that!! I've edited it appropriately for you!!!!

Well that’s really what hurling is and people rave about it. Get the ball, thump it as hard as you can in the direction of the goals and go win your own ball. It’s back and forth and exciting. So, the decision is an end to end game with very little structure or strategy which is exiting; or a game with high level of structures, possession game and afraid to lose??? Bring back the 90s and early noughties I say. I know someone that would say “ban the handpass altogether”.

Our game has evolved considerably. Maybe not for the better.

I have been following this thread for a while now. I must say we have a very passionate fan base. However, lets call a spade a spade, we are renowned bottlers. We are loosing/drawing too many games over the last few years that we are in complete control of. I put this down to lack of character and leadership. Thoughts?

Conversely we have also won a couple of games we should have lost. Longford and Clare from last year spring to mind. However, we do need to get over the line in a tight one to get the current monkey of our backs. Hopefully this Sunday will see us do it

Football is all about fine margins and hundreds of tiny moments in each game which can ultimately culminate in the final outcome. We seemed to have made a number of these mistakes in the final minutes of games recently which have made big differences however I wonder if we were to play all three league games again would the results be different? Are we a better team than Kildare, Clare or Meath?

In all honesty Diarmi the results are conclusive. We are equal to both Kildare and Clare and below Meath. That's reality. We can blame the ref or officials all we want, but still have to take responsibility for our own actions [or inactions] as we should never have allowed ourselves to be in the position of conceding to a draw. A bit of "cuteness" or "gamesmanship" sacrificing a player or two to black cards in the dying minutes may have gotten us over the line. The mistakes by officials are inexcusable, but by that standard then so too are our mistakes. In particular the Clare final line ball leading to the "goal" was almost identical to their line ball only a moment or two beforehand. I totally agree with
To be fair, the Clare game was a complete robbery - I'm convinced the umpire thought the ball hit the stanchion when it clearly hit the post.
but we made the mistake that lead to the umpire getting it wrong. Don't forget also that we caught the ball and dropped it too.

Meath were just better and more determined. Something we lack - determination. It's all well having a piece in the paper saying "we let Geezer down!" but not acting on it and letting us as supporters down again and again is insulting.

There are few outside this forum more passionate than us here, but collectively we are passionate and loyal (the orange LOL - Loyal Orange Lapdogs) and deserve the same respect Geezer asks for.

Would the results be different? I doubt it. We should have known enough beforehand to have the homework done and get the result. We should have learned from each game and improve, but then so should they. It would be interesting if we had a two way league and see what would happen in those scenarios. We seem to be in our place right now.

I'm completely with @niall1980 when he says we "must" win this weekend. Lose and we're gone again to 3. That on it's own says all we need to say. All the pre-season optimism will be gone and again we'll be proved to be dreaming above our position. BUT, we can win this one. The motivation should be evident as the lads race out onto the field. We owe Tipp big time. We need a marker of intent. No excuses. No going back. Play strong and confident going forward and we're back on track. Get limp wristed and it's lovely gardens this summer again with a short playing season leaving nothing else to do on a Sunday. I'd even be fearful heading to Newry in May - not defeated beforehand, but not confident.

Shite Diarmi I need one of your motivational speeches. I'm feeling low not being able to be there this week!

Not sure I can help at present @Calm1, the wind has been knocked out of my sails recently. I think us fans need a win too.
