National League 2019

There was nothing in those highlights which would cheer you up.

The pressure is most certainly on for a win in navan. Meath will also be under pressure. A win will still give us a realistic shot at promotion but a defeat will leave promotion almost out of reach. You typically need 10 or 11 points to finish in the top two and we still have to visit ballybofey.

Kildare and Donegal already pulling ahead and both should win at the weekend.

Meath are favourites for this weekend - 4/6 Meath, armagh 6/4, draw 15/2

I'm genuinely ok with no promotion. Avoiding relegation should be the primary goal
Its a very tight division at the minute. The number of draws over the past two weeks reflect that there is not really much between any of the teams. Cork looked like they had chances to win their game against Kildare last night, although edited highlights may not tell the whole story of the balance of the match. Meath look very strong on the ball and their direct running game will be a handful for us. Consolidating Div 2 status will do nicely for this year.

This is a little more confusing. Makes it sound like each team should return to the set-up for throw in for each kick out, but maybe I'm reading this wrong:

Proposal (5)

Kick-Out/Zoning

For a kick-out, two players only from each team shall be positioned between the two 45m lines.

The goalkeeper and a maximum of six players from each team shall be behind the respective 45m lines, until the ball is kicked.

The ball from the kick-out shall travel beyond the 45m line before being played by a player of the defending team.

Other Rules relating to the kick-out to remain unchanged.

Penalties:

(1) For another player on the team taking a kick-out to play the ball before it has travelled outside the 45m line or has been played by an opposing player.

Penalty:

(i) Cancel kick-out

(ii) Throw in the ball on defenders’ 20m line in front of the scoring space.

(2) For a player to cross a 45m line before the ball is kicked for the kick-out.

(3) For a player(s) to, in the opinion of the referee, deliberately seek to delay the kick-out by not retreating behind the 45m lines in a timely manner.

Penalty for the above Fouls:

A 45m free off the ground and in front of the scoring space shall be awarded to the opposing team.

(4) For a player(s) of each team to simultaneously cross the 45m line(s) before the ball is kicked from the kick-out:

Penalty:

A throw-in ball shall be awarded on the centre of the 45m line involved or at the centre of the field (if infringements are made on both 45m lines).
dont know if this was covered, so apologies if I'm going over old ground. This rule was amended almost immediately after it was proposed after the likelihood of teams slowing down opposition kickouts, teams playing their 2 nippiest players in midfield to kick the ball into space etc. Now the kick is taken from the 20m line and must travel at least 13m.

See Aodan O'Rourke's piece on the RTE site about game management - very relevant to us. It takes leadership on and off the field - we are missing that bit of know-how. Need Donaghy on the field. We should have 4 points by now. Next up - Meath will be very tough.

No talk about the umpires who were very involved in the decisions re both goals.

Well I did say at the time they must have the best eyesight I'd ever witnessed for umpires as most times they see nothing & often struggle to decide whether points have been scored. We really got lucky with these four

Seen the brief highlights on the Gaa Now link. There is no way Morgan or the keeper touched the ball. It looks like Morgan got a challenge in on the arm that reduced the power of the handpass. Joke of a decision.

On the last goal. Looks like (although it’s not definitive) that the ball did not cross the line. If the umpires say it came off the inside stanchion they are completely incorrect. It clearly came off the post. Now. The footage isn’t clear what happened after that for a split second but it looks highly unlikely the ball went over the line.

Definitely done up like a kipper here lads.

Linesmen swap sides at half time. Do umpires swap ends?

Funny, someone asked me this same question on Sunday :) My thinking was that if they switched ends it would mean they would be doing the scores for the same team for the entire match which wouldn't really seem fair. However I did google it to be sure to be sure & no the umpires don't switch ends after half time.

Yeah someone has already mentioned that buddy. I didn't realise that and was just taking it from gaa.ie Seems they don't update as often as they should. They're still showing the 3 handless rule as live!

Seems they have great vision even being able to see clearly through obstructions. Their instruction has always been a decision cannot be given "either way" unless they are entirely sure.

First goal was given by the umpire furtherest away rather than by the one closest who had a good view and he stood still. Only when the Clare players shouted and the other one who was looking through the posts and netting, came forward was it about to be given. Then the ref approached and spoke to them and the flag was raised. Really disgraceful.
Second goal both umpires were standing back (correctly by the way) and again both obstructed by players, posts and netting yet were able to jump immediately on the flag when the ball was played away.

Lets be honest though, regardless of whether or not they made a bogus call, we should not have been in that position. Just a minute or two beforehand they had an identical lineal that they scored. We should have had a packed line knowing that only a goal would be enough for them. We have to take responsibility for that. But we have a right to feel aggrieved I think.

Was the first goal given, as the fist pass was judged to be deflected in off an Armagh player?
Going by what I was told yesterday, it would seem so even though the video shows it to be wrong. As was pointed out, the slow motion is clear that it was not a goal, but unfortunately we don't see or live life in slow motion.

That was 6 points given against us incorrectly, that's a hefty margin in any match. We would have won Sunday's match at a canter if these mistakes hadn't occurred, aggrieved would be putting it mildly!!
