If in the instance a division 3/4 team make their provincial final there will more than 16 teams in the race for Sam. In this case there will be a Preliminary round in the qualifiers.

Prelim = if more than 8 teams are in the AI qualifier pot teams will be drawn out to play a prelim round, remainder through to round 1

Round 1 = all division 1 and 2 teams that don’t make provincial final. 8 teams, 4 games.

Round 2 = 4 beaten provincial finalists v 4 round 1 winners.

Quarter finals = 4 provincial winners v round 2 winners.

Semi finals and finals as normal.

All that is correct but realistically it would take Tipperary to reach the Munster final or a seismic shock elsewhere for a preliminary round to be required. Very difficult to see someone from outside the top 2 divisions reaching provincial finals in Ulster, Connacht or Leinster. That puts 6 teams in the qualifiers. Munster will have a minimum of 2 and only a third if Tipp can turn the clock back 2 years.

Wouldn't be that earth shattering were Westmeath to turn over Meath, or even Kildare, in a Leinster semi-final.

The system is a bit of a mess this year. Not a lot of time to schedule in a preliminary round should it be required. Also seems quite possible that the handier route to an AI QF could be through the back door. Win or lose against Donegal and we're still two wins from the QF stage. Stay in Ulster and that probably means Cavan and Tyrone, but in the backdoor it could mean Louth and Limerick. Things will be more sensible when it changes again in 2023.

Is it not also possible we or Donegal could play the beaten Ulster semi finalists in the first round of the qualifiers also?

This is absolutely possible.

The qualifiers will throw up some tough games and very few straightforward matches.

That said if we are anywhere near where we think we are then Louth, Meath, Limerick, Clare or Cork should not trouble us. Matches against the ulster or Munster sides in Division 1 or 2 or say Kildare and you would need to be on your game

Probably late August/first week September. I see from fixtures senior and intermediate B not finished until 19th August due to 9 teams being in it whereas senior A with 8 teams intermediate A with 7 teams finishes the 5th.

Could give teams from the B section an advantage as they’ll have less of a gap with no matches! Or a disadvantage depending on how you look at it.

I actually disagree here. We would struggle against any of the named teams as we don't hold the favourites tag well. Meath and Clare have given us real trouble in the past and Mickey's Louth away would be a horrible tie! I'd prefer a so called bigger team in the back door (non-Ulster preferably), we seem to raise our game against the better sides.

Back door this year is 1 game and then play provincial losers more than likely
So potentially easier than a run in Ulster
