Some coup. Club football there of a pretty poor standard, so you'd wonder how much he could really do with them. Shades of Micko in Wicklow.

Only way is up for Louth. They can def achieve a promotion or 2 if they get buy-in from all players and tier 2 Championship also. Exciting times for Louth GAA.

Yes Mickey in a win win situation, taking the under 20 team as well I hear

Really believe that yesterday highlights some of the absolute excuse laden Rubbish that has been used to defend a lot of championship performances Over the past 3/4 years perhaps even more.
I actually don’t believe that Cavan league performance can be totally dismissed.
I believe they had 10 starters v Armagh that played yesterday and we utterly destroyed them. The Simple fact of the matter is below Dublin there is very little difference on the day between the talent levels of about 12/13 teams
Anyone can beat anyone if Tactics, attitude, preparation and performance is at the optimum level.
For whatever reason when the pressure is ratcheted up our team both at the management and playing level has not proved capable of that
After the semi final there was a lot of guff spoken about us not being at Donegal’s level and we couldn’t have expected to beat them.
Yesterday proves how utterly wrong that was.
There is zero chance that the team Cavan had on the field yesterday is more talented than ours and yet they were 15 points better than us.
Why is that ? Why are we incapable of producing our best when it’s needed?
I strongly believe our current structure has taken us as far as we can. How much more evidence Is needed. There have been multiple horror performances in the championship now that no other management in the country would have gotten a free pass on.
Plus it is one of the biggest myths in Ireland that this is a young team.
The vast majority of our starters v Donegal are far closer to the end than the start of their careers.
Another point. How many Armagh players have had their best season recently in their first season in the jersey. I’d use Niall Grimley Rian and Jarly og as examples of that predominantly.
Niall’s driving from midfield to score has disappeared. Rian never scored from play in the champ this year and Jarly og has looked totally lost all year.
is good coaching not supposed to improve players ?
The whole panel needs a refresh and new ideas. However the Manager is unlikely to refresh the back room team as everyone knows he has his cohorts that he doesn’t go outside.
We are stuck at a level now that we will never surpass and a lot of players careers have been wasted.
Give me Jimmy Mc Guiness in the morning.
We’d win an ulster title with him !
Very good post - many strong points made.
If Louth can get Harte - why couldn't Armagh get McGuinness?
Time for change - then courage and imagination.

Just think if he brought Louth back to Leinster contendefs.
cause the CB are happy with McGeeney plus he's bigger than them ;)

It is going to happen but it is going to be seriously frustrating to watch Armagh play and have another year wasted. It is a shame the CB's job isn't on the line with McGeeney's should next year be a failure.

I don't think club football has much to do with county success. How many Ulster senior club titles have Tyrone or Donegal clubs won in the last 20 years?

They may not have ripped it up at senior with only Errigal Ciaran winning but at junior and Intermediate Tyrone have 13 titles. The senior teams generally do reasonably well but they also have an extremely competitive and even senior championship. Overall club football in Tyrone is probably stronger than any county in Ulster and that feeds into the county success

bcb has already answered this pretty well.

Strength in depth at club level is key to success at county level. A healthy, competitive club scene produces a better standard of player, produces more engaged players, produces county standard players in greater numbers. The logic to this is irrefutable.

But performance at senior provincial level is not a great indicator of the strength in depth of at county level. A strong, deep club scene stymies provincial success, as no one club repeatedly emerges from a county to obtain provincial experience. So provincial success is much harder won.

Cavan's performance on Sunday was the performance I thought we would deliver v Donegal. I would be the first to admit that I view the world through Orange tinted glasses but we have the personnel and capability to achieve this. We need to work out what went wrong and learn lessons urgently, whilst looking ahead to the possibilities of a Division 1 campaign.

From what I can see it's relatively simple. Cavan have a "big" strong team, they've unearthed galligan who's a shoo-in for all star, they have a brilliant goalkeeper and kick out strategy that works for them and they play their dangerous forwards close to goal. Most importantly they, to a man from what I've seen, have balls and there's a lot to be said for that particularly in the skittery winter football season.

They also look to know wha they were doing with and without the ball.
The lad galligan is a joy to watch

Cavan are much stronger up the middle than we are. Their number 1, 3, 6, 8 and 11 would all start ahead of ours. Riain at 14 and maybe Oisin at 9 might shade it over theirs.

No reason why not? Has this been mentioned anywhere?

I thought I heard that a while back.

Although I haven’t been studying my diagram as much as I’d like.
