Ulster Senior Football Championship 2020

This was a massive win for us. Coming after the promotion to div 1 last week it must have been difficult to keep the boys focused. Add to that playing against a Rory Gallagher side away from home on a shitty day in November I think we should all be very happy with a two point win.
We looked as if we were afraid to win and played massively within ourselves but I don't imagine us playing like that against Donegal. There was a huge weight of expectation on the team and management so getting over the line was the important thing. We could well see a totally different performance in the next game.
I was delighted to see Blaine have a good game, maybe now people will start to cut him some slack. I think Kennedy and O'Neill were very good in defence for relatively new players, they have certainly made the selector's job easy the next day. Forker was also impressive, boy how he has matured over the years, remember he used to get booked or sent off nearly every game!! Midfield was quite enough today, they just did the basics without any fanfare, probably what was needed in fairness. Grimley looked back to his best when he came on, he did not look fit the last two league games.
Grugan was immense, he is a class act and has rebounded from his poor season last year. Great to see the spark back with Jamie again, it must have been difficult for him the last few week, very frustrating but fair play to Geezer for sticking with him. Rian was quiet but then again so was McKaigue so we will call that a draw. Soupy has also matured a lot and he I think we are seeing a much more team orientated player but again a class act.
I have watched the Roccommon and Clare games about nine times now and we seem to make the same mistakes to let the opposition back into games. Our confidence gets high and we go for more ambitious kick passing and lose concentration on the simple things. We were better today but these things still cropped up so more work to be done. Today I suppose we can blame the weather to an extent though.
It would be lovely to think that we can enjoy the Donegal game but I'm sure you will all be like me and jumping around the sitting room like angry toddlers. Pressure off me arse!!

Do you disagree with any of the points - tackling and discipline? I found very little to take from today bar the result and couple of men really standing up - Forker for example. Keeper good and full back line did fairly well
The issue I would have with your post is the bit I have highlighted. The point is, the only thing that matters is the result, particularly in this year's championship with no second chances. So for me, its a huge plus first and then maybe look at things to be improved on.
This analogy might not work or make any sense but to me it's a bit like somebody winning the lottery and then somebody saying 'but apart from winning all that money, what's so good about winning the lottery?'

Great win, well done to all played involved.
These are testing times and with no fans away from home in wintery conditions we got over the line.

From today we can massively still improve which is a great sign for 2 week’s time. Looking forward to giving Donegal a rattle, would really love to take them off their throne. The concern is frees mainly, we must be top of the list in Ireland in terms of counties giving away scoring free opportunities.

a few tweaks to the starting 15 against Donegal and who knows

Did anyone see O'Neill kick the ball at the back of the Derry player and the ref spotted it so moved the free forward :D

We're at a point now were we want to win Ulster Championships again, not just beat div 3 teams in the first round. Winning Ulster is winning the lottery which we won't do if our discipline doesn't improve.

Grimley was excellent when he came on as we were in trouble at that stage - he won vital possession.

Great to get the win up there.

Thought Blaine was very good with his kickouts although wasn’t tested with any shots. Forker and Grugan really stood up today, put serious shifts in and kicked some crucial scores. Defensively we were decent enough- ridiculous amount of frees given away though, but I think the ref was hash enough with some of them.

Jarly Og and Soupy both had a very good game, as did Grimley when he came on- need him fully fit for Donegal. Kennedy looked solid at the back and so did Conor O’Neill who also kicked a lovely score, great debut for the lad. Also great to see Jamie finding some form again. Didn’t see much of the O’Neills although Rian was well marshalled- kicked a few superb frees though.

Anyway we did what we had to do against a mediocre team with a mediocre manager, Donegal are a different kettle of fish as we all know.

Anyone know why Murnin, Donaghy, Paul Hughes, Ethan Rafferty and Jemar Hall havent featured? Not fit? All would be either starters or very close to it.

Championship games are for winning and we won, albeit, we don’t make it easy at times. Focus must now turn to a team that are seasoned at the highest level and are undoubtedly ahead of us but I feel we can have a go at that them. We will need to be very disciplined as our lack of discipline is often exposed by more experienced, more street-wise teams eg Mayo in Castlebar last year and Roscommon recently.

Two weeks now to get ready. Mid-November will likely bring bleaker conditions than today which can also be a bit of a leveller.

If we bring our ‘A’ game, get our match-ups right, keep our discipline and take our chances then we can give it a go. A lot of ifs but I remain an optimist.

It should have been a red. Take the ridiculous reaction out of it and it’s a strike to the head. Red card. If anbrose does that to ONeill today you’ll be calling for a red

Just reading through now. Definitely a red by rule but McKernan should be embarrassed. Did anyone notice him doing something similar to Brennan on Murphy near end. No reaction from Murphy at all and no card.

If he had have stayed on his feet and referee saw it, I would have have said possibly a case for a red. However, when a player drops and acts like Tyson hit him he loses all sympathy. Glad it was only a yellow in that instance because of the exaggeration
Propose that rule change for the next convention then.

Absolutely certain red. I do not know how McQuillan justifies a yellow

The important thing today was not the performance but the result - we are into an Ulster Semi-final.

Roll on Donegal as everyone outside of the county and many inside the county will expect us to get well beaten. On a one off game anything can happen.

We can look at positives or negatives from today but to be honest I'm just glad we have a semi-final to look forward to.

Well done to all involved today.

A win is a win and too often we have lost or drawn games like that. So that is progress.

other positives were our own kick outs and that at least in the first half we pushed up on theirs. The wind was a factor on the change on that in the second half. The games this weekend have really illustrated that just conceding the opposition kick out is the road to nowhere. Let’s take that lesson forward.

Kennedy impressed again. He will be critical against Donegal. They have a tall forward line and our lack of height across the back line may prove critical.
Hughes didn’t have any goal keeping to do but nailed his kicks. If he had dropped the ball JOB spilled he would have been pilloried.

The side ways passing (even allowing for the impact of the wind in the 2 halves) and the poor tackling still look like our undoing. Still areas for improvement.

less mouth today. Which is a blessing. Note Tyrone lost by 2 having conceded 2 points from frees moved up to kickable positions. We can learn from the mistakes of others
