Armagh were extremely impressive tonight against a very poor Cavan side. Our shooting from range in the first half was top notch, while in the second half Stephan Campbell tore them apart with his direct running and link up play. Conor Turbitt was excellent and to score that amount on your league debut is a brilliant way to start. Niall Grimley is developing into a top class county midfielder, Oisin O'Neill had a strong game and Brendan Donaghy was solid in defence. The comments about having someone who can block the centre of our defence are spot on. We are weak here and this will be exploited by better sides. Going forward we have a lot of options, which is an exciting thought. With the likes of Clarke and Murnin being players you'd think would come back into the side, we have quality competition for places. Another win next week against Laois would be a great start to the league. They’ve been a real bogey team for us over the years, so a win against them would be great.

Cavan were awful. Missing Killian Clarke, Dara McVeety and Cian Mackey made a huge difference to them. They did manage to run up out centre on a number of occasions, but didn’t have the players to make it count. There were a few times they were nearly in for a goal in the first half and if they’d got those it may have been a different game. They could struggle this season.

I feel like the 'cock of the north' right now. Our team was near absolutely 'impeccable' tonight. Roll on! Roll on!

I agree - very good

2 concerns:
Defence too open on first half, and goalkeeper!

I’d say McGeary is Collegeland championship winning captain, he’d be around same age as Rian and Turbitt. Finn from Granemore I think.
Cahair McGeary Collegeland was on recent U20 teams and has been with Senior panel for year or so I think. Very talented and worth a chance at half back, especially when it is obvious defence needs to be looked at going forward as a team. Plays midfield for his club but extremely versatile.

Great all round performance last night, lead the game start to finish. Plenty of positives to come away with to take into the Laois game. Decision making was alot better going forward, setting up and waiting for the right option at the right time. Defensively Armagh were solid, Paddy Burns first game back and looked sharp, Brendy Donaghy is pivotal at holding the middle solid as ever. Cavan obviously were down key players from last year and you could tell that easily on last nights performance they are a contender for the drop you would think. Although you can only beat whats in front of you and Armagh done that convincingly.

Stand out performers last night although its early days in his Armagh career young Turbitt hasn't put a foot wrong yet. His mark for the first score was outstanding, he doesn't shy away from having a go and is very accurate. Thought Soupy was excellent, had the Cavan defence on the back foot all night with his direct running breaking the lines, assisting plenty of the scores and ending up with 1-2 himself. Think appointing him as Captain will bring his game on even further and will be a big player/leader for Armagh this forthcoming year.

I was impressed with the new lads. Turbo speaks for himself. ONeill at the back was good; he didn’t really impress me in the McKenna cup. Cumiskey had a good game too tho he got turned over a couple of times. Was always willing the take the ball and move things on

Well done Armagh, great win against a very ordinary Cavan side. They look a shoe in for relegation based on last nights performance.

Turbitt was outstanding, we must have scored 5 or 6 fabulous long range points from play in the first half. I thought soupy really looked sharp and the forwards worked incredibly hard when we lost possession. Defence did alright, but it’s hard to judge as Cavan we’re so poor.

at long last we now have a panel which is making it extremely competitive for places, to see them win without the likes of hall, nugent, Clarke, Hughes etc suggests we now have decent strength in depth. The 2 o neill a have really added something extra to the team, they remind me of the 2 mc entees in terms of their confidence.

only concern I have as many say is when teams run at us, though I thought bug played well in chb. Goalkeeper is still suspect on kick outs and under high ball, but he’s the best available and we just have to persevere
Well done lads, gr8 opportunity to power on now

What did the keeper do wrong?
I suppose their goal showed up that he is suspect under a high ball. But then he made a class save with his left foot, so one makes up for another. But it is a worry that teams can just launch one in and they've got a chance. We aren't massively physical in the full line back either, which adds to the problem. Other than that, I didn't think Hughes did too much wrong.

Our tackling was better last night. We didn't give away countless stupid frees for pushing people in the back when they have no where to go. Not a lot of ball was played into the forwards, so we weren't tested too much. We got caught a few times taking the ball into a tackle or over complicating things, which allowed Cavan to swarm around us. That's an area that can be improved on. With James Morgan, Paul Hughes, Joe McElroy, Mark Shields, Aaron McKay, Jemar Hall, Aiden Nugent, Jamie Clarke, Jarly Óg Burns, Andrew Murnin and Ethan Rafferty being on the bench or missing last night, these are players that are either key personnel or started or played regularly in the Championship last season, giving us serious options, that we haven't had in the past. This is what we've been building towards for a number of years now and have had to be patient with, until players got to the right age and developed enough to play county football. It's encouraging to see.

I thought at the time there was a foul on the keeper for their goal

A great overall performance last night, Conor Turbitt was doing all he can to get his staring position what a league debut for him, soup was excellent, thought Patrick Burns was excellent as well. Cavan aren't the team from last year but you can only beat whats there in front of you and we were probably more ruthless with the cavan team than we would have been in the past. Shame to concede the goal but overall encouraging start to the league.
