2020 season - write off?

Killeavy senior footballers been told to be prepared to be on the pitch for training within the next two weeks for group sessions. Players will keep in groups of 8 to try and avoid any outbreaks. This will be our year.
I imagine if that post is correct that it is totally against gaa and government guidelines, not that I place much faith in the stormont or free state government

While I am in full agreement in general @armaghforsam , this article below suggests a return to club training by the end of June. I know that's not in two weeks time, but pretty near enough to suggest there may be something in it. It was on RTE news last night about it with talk of the club championship starting around July across all 32 counties followed by the AI series maybe early to mid October.

I know some of us are hanging onto every hope that it will be returned soon and maybe over reading some things, but I genuinely believe it's gonna happen. I know @JoeH is in the same camp. @PatMustard doesn't think it'll ever return and myself and @ShiftYa had an enlightening discussion on how finances could force it back (tongue in cheek buddy) and even he/she is coming round to it returning soon :D

Club football back end of July apparently.
Yeah looks like club championship only from what I've been listening to, but that would be a lot considering some were forecasting a total wipeout for the year. Tickets will be scarce for the first junior games with everyone so desperate to get out. There'll be tens of thousands at them.

Has it been announced that supporters will be allowed to attend matches? I was still under the illusion that any football played at this early stage would be behind closed doors. Admittedly I did not read the entire document issued today, I was waiting for the abridged version on here ;);)

How do folk on here feel about the fact that there looks like there will be no resumption of the league, with plans to proceed with a knockout based (intercounty) championship? Would prefer to re-establish club competitions and at intercounty level, focus on completing the leagues. Forget the championship for this year.

@pablo - knockout county championship makes sense. Maybe if all goes well, the championship will be played before the winter weather.

If they manage to complete that, they might finish the last couple of league matches. They could do that in the depths of winter, as that’s when it’s mostly played anyway.

The money is in the county game, and counties might be better able to manage/afford testing, quarantine facilities or whatever. Maybe clubs wouldn’t be able to manage those logistics/costs etc. So in a way, playing the county game first makes some sense.

@PatMustard-I hear what you are saying and there is much sense in that. If we run a modified (knockout-based) championship in 2020, what do we then do in 2021? Retain the knockout format, or go back to the same structure as used until recently? Whoever would win the All Ireland this year (if it goes ahead) would possibly be thought of as having come through a makeshift campaign, and people in their mind may place an 'asterisk' beside that teams name ("ah-but if it had been under normal circumstances..."). I would rather we do the championship properly at a time when we are able to. Maybe I am just terrified at the idea of Tyrone been able to capitalize on this and gain some success this year-a concept possibly more abhorrent than Donald Trump getting re elected.

@pablo - well, that’s the thing. If we get a knockout in 2020, and it’s a great success, there might be pressure to adapt that in future years. The GAA won’t like that, as that could put a stop to the back door, their Super 8 cash cow, and their two tier championship.

But there’s no way a normal championship could go ahead this year (provincials, back door and Super 8’s etc). It’s debatable whether a quick knockout championship would be finished either, with the potential risk of a second wave.

But if social distancing hangs about for a year or two, and with no vaccine available, the 2020 championship would be the guinea pig. No point looking to run a normal championship in 2021 with no homework done. It might fall flat on its face with no guinea pig championship having taken place in 2020.

If we had a knockout 2020, I’d be all for it, as that’s the format I’d prefer to have every year (that ain’t going to happen though). But, 2020 would be a once-off for it. The championship has had various formats in recent years (knockout, back door, super 8), and no asterixes appear beside any winner. Even without crowds, I think we’d see a really interesting championship with plenty of big scalps (and not just McGeeney’s).

on the other hand......it could be a while before we are back to 'normal', and we are more than likely will have to adjust to a new type of 'normality' in 2021. Cannot assume that a 2021 championship would be able to proceed in the same way as we have previously known it, so maybe best to go with what type of format is possible and safe for present. Still think we should just focus on finishing the league-completes what we started earlier in the year and gives us a controllable and limited set of games to see how things might work in the future

Apologies @PatMustard -I posted a minute or so ago before seeing your reply above.
Think we are agreeing on a few points alright although I would prefer to first focus on completing the league games as a trial for before stepping up in 2021 for a revamped approach to the championship.

YES. Finish the competition that was already ongoing.
I still can't get my head around the obsession with playing the Championship. I totally get that in a normal year it would be about the money but if there will be no supporters attending matches surely this can't be the reason for the big push about playing the Championship.

Yes, I think it makes sense to have a guinea pig competition taking place before a ‘normal’ championship in 2021.

Be that a completion of the 2020 leagues, or an alternative championship.

We can’t be going into a 2021 season blind, with no trials of how matches will work and all the logistics and planning that goes with that.

Surely Trump is not that bad to compare him to that lot

I imagine it's the championship that's the cash cow which is why the county and club championships will take precedence. It'll run and finish. There'll be no McKenna etc in January and the last two rounds of the leagues will replace those and no play offs. A few weeks break to get ready and then into the 2021 leagues. That's my best guess and just an opinion based on reading the reports on RTE, BBC and the GAA website!!
