Sure is it not already sitting true North/South in orientation? Or is my compass playing up again?
No (apparently) if you were standing dead centre of Ireland - boy I never thought I'd be having this conversation on a GAA forum
- which is somewhere roughly around Athlone (can't remember exactly as the conversation was quite a while ago,) and looking straight up towards the north coast we imagine that north is somewhere around Malin Head ish when in fact that's about 25º N/E or something like that. It's slightly more left which leaves the little doggy image island tilting slightly backwards if it was to be oriented true North which is slightly different to magnetic North which is another few degrees west again . Now I wish I had paid more attention in Geography classes 64 years ago and I still wouldn't be able to remember any of that anyway.
Now to Caveat all of that, I was told it on an evening out several years ago (yes I know there are those who believe we were never allowed to leave the house without special permission from doctors and the government, but there was a time in a galaxy far far away.............Oh yeah different story!!) and there may have been alcohol consumed. Thankfully not by myself as I'm teetotal, or in the words of a great philosopher, "too damn tight to spend money on it!
