He’s been carrying knocks for a couple of years now it seems. Hopefully he gets the rest he needs and back to his best.
I don't see much mention of Rowland. Is he out for the long term? I thought he was a very effective when in that half back line, marshalling and making sure the defence kept its shape. We have not looked as solid back there since he has been out

Yes Rowland is definitely a good option - a good man to have on the ball when a game is in the melting pot. Didn't seem to be togged out in that training photo so I'd presume he's out unfortunately.

A lot of pessimism on the forum recently and I must admit I feel the same way. Hopefully this doesn't creep into the team bubble. I really can't see us wining on Sunday, it's a shit feeling especially after the great start to the year. Hopefully I am wrong.
Some things I will be watching our for;

- Kick outs - If, after six weeks and most of the league, we have not sorted this out then serious questions will have to be asked of the management.
- Rian - Where he plays and how he plays. Rian's performance against Donegal and indeed in many games tends to be a barometer of where the team is at. I know a lot of people are saying he should be close to the goals but personally I think a MF or CHF position would give him more freedom to express himself. He has serious aerial ability and can score from long range so would be a major asset around the middle.
- Turbitt/McQuillan - These boys have to start and run the shite out of the cheaters. These two boys could have a serious impact but again they need to be utilised properly
- Defence - Have the lessons been learned?
- Kick passing - We need to go back to what was successful in the league. Against Donegal we reverted to type and played safe although this was also due to how Donegal set up against us. In the league we were having major success by long kick passes out of defence. Niall Rowland was excellent at this in particular but there were many others also.

I actually feel a bit better now, hopefully I'll feel even better on Sunday afternoon and be tuned in to Radio One at 8.35 on Monday to see who we got in the next round........

Solid post this Diarmi and I would say most Armagh fans would be of this way of thinking.

The kick out thing is frustrating all of us, and it's a mixture of players not moving and no decision making. Management were also culpable giving up opposition kickouts in the league and championship. So we need movement, and we need to contest the kickout.

Rowland has been a massive miss in that half back line in my opinion. It's like a decade long hole in our defense that was closed for the first 3 or 4 league games just reopened. He is a great passer of the ball as well and was a calming presence.

I'd start turbitt myself though I do not know enough about mc quillan. But turbitt has to start.

I'd go with something like this and there is almost a looking back to look forward element here,

Hughes

P Burns (if fit)
Forker
Mc Kay

Mackin
Mc cabe
J Burns

Rafferty
Crealey

Nugent
R O Neill
O O Neill

Grugan
Turbitt
J Kierans/C o Neill

Sheridan in my opinion misses out in Midfield, I think we need more there, and with Grimley injured, Mackin injured, Kelly Out for a while, then we are missing 3 starters. Rafferty is fit, he is mobile again and he is a solid fielder and passer of the ball. Simply put, he is a midfielder and we need a solid midfielder.

Hall misses out in my team, I just feel we need a bit more and this is not a slight on Hall, just that I think we need a stronger and more physical presence in the half forward line.

Duffy has unfortunately flattered to decieve second half of the league and by all accounts C O Neill is flying. So I've named either him or Kierans (a mobile, shrewd ball winner and heavy scoring Div 1 club forward who has been on the panel all season). Either leave kierans up and let grugan roam. Or start C O Neill and bring him out towards midfield and the half forward line and give him a free role.

I know there are a couple of positional switches, but I think Armagh would suit that more. I've a feeling though that rather than be brave, our management will revert to type

I agree with alot of this. Rians best position is CHF maybe play grugan in the corner where he can drift out and be a playmaker. I am 100% in agreement with turbitt and mcquillan they need to be starting and get a run of games. We have alot of players at a good age alot of these guys are under 25

From today's Irish News. Note the last line.

OISIN O'Neill insists Armagh have shed the disappointment of their Ulster Championship exit to Donegal six weeks ago and says they are “still as close as ever” to reaching Croke Park.

The Orchard men will be reacquainted with defending All-Ireland champions Tyrone in Sunday's win-or-bust All-Ireland Round One Qualifier at The Athletic Grounds following their respective first round provincial defeats.

A quirk of the new back door format is that the early provincial fallers are still only two games away from reaching the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

With the Division Three and Division Four teams being diverted to the inaugural Tailteann Cup, the chances of some of the bigger guns clashing in the All-Ireland Qualifiers was significantly higher.

“I was sitting in the carpark outside work, probably a few minutes late going in, waiting on the draw,” said O'Neill, who was a second-half substitute in Armagh's six-point defeat to Donegal on April 24.

“More than likely we were going to draw a really, really good team and it was no shock to us that we got Tyrone. We had prepared for a Division One team and hopefully we are ready now.

“Ultimately, we see this is as taking another step and trying to get a step closer to Croke Park, trying to get to the last eight and being in the draw for the next round.”

Armagh will be aiming for a hat-trick of wins over their arch rivals on Sunday, having already beaten them in a fiery National League clash and a McKenna Cup tie earlier this year.

While Armagh were touted as being strong contenders for this season's Ulster title, they struggled to hit the high notes in Ballybofey.

However, O'Neill insists there was “no hangover” from that disappointing display and were comforted by the fact that the distance to the last eight remains the same.

Speaking at a press briefing in The Athletic Grounds last week, the Crossmaglen man said: “That is the way we looked at it in the changing rooms in Ballybofey.

“We are still only two games away from an All-Ireland quarter-final and Croke Park and ultimately everyone knows where you have to be. The goal hadn't changed. Yes, we mightn't have been able to win an Ulster Championship but we are still as close as ever to Croke Park.

“I suppose after the Donegal game we sort of hit the reset. We had six weeks and there was no hangover as such from the game.

“We just trained really hard for a couple of weeks after it. These are the games that we want to play in, we all want to play in the big games and they don't come much bigger than this.

“Naturally, we were disappointed about how we performed [against Donegal]. But the time gave us a good chance for reflection, everyone knows you take more from defeats and more learnings and we have been lucky enough we got six weeks to try and put those learnings into practice.”

Criticised in the aftermath of the Donegal game for their perceived failure in overcoming stressful periods in big Championship matches, O'Neill firmly rejected the notion and said they simply weren't clinical enough during their periods of ascendancy.

“I don't think it is fair. If you look back at the game, we had more than enough chances to win two games and that is on us as players that we didn't execute those plans. A lot of work has gone on to fix that in the meantime.”

Niall Grimley (neck) and Ciaran Mackin (eye) will miss Sunday's Championship showdown due to injury, while TJ Kelly is a major doubt.

O'Neill, however, is fully fit again and is fancied to win back his place in Kieran McGeeney's starting line-up.

Hope thats true about O’Neill then- massive boost if he’s fit.

On Rian- definitely very good around the middle but also one of the best inside forwards in the country and our best chance against Donegal came off a long ball to him. If we can get ball into him and the likes of Duffy or Turbitt feeding off the breaks we will get goals against any team. I’d rotate him between full forward and further out

That team won't start he will definitely play hall because of his work rate and without Kelly who also gets through alot of work he will not have both out.

I get what you are saying, but I will be honest, the work rate point (and I've used it in the past myself) doesn't really mean much to me now. I don't see players in an Armagh jersey not working their socks off. Work rate is a given for an intercounty player. I think we need a more physical and direct scoring half forward line

I do agree with you, every player should work hard that's the minimum that they should do

Word is that Niall Rowland played for Culloville last night which would indicate that he is either no longer with the county panel, or is not in the squad for this weekend.

Trying to be more positive today about the match lol. Armagh although they have been bad underage we have a good young squad. Magill, turbitt,Kelly, kierans, McQuillan, oisin O'Neill, Rian O'Neill, Conor O'Neill, mcconville, crealy, jarly og, Duffy, ciaran mackin, mccambridge,Higgins are all under 25 and some young players like Finnegan and mcgrane maybe a few others will push into the squad In the next few year or 2

Would be disappointing on rowland
With Tyrone behind the ball in athletic grounds think would be important to have him as ball player from defence
Also to have rian out pitch as don’t think they have a man for him out the pitch

Hopefully the 4 subs that were introduced in ballybofey will have big roles on Sunday - o.oneill / Nugent / Campbell / mcquillan, particularly as we are missing grimley and kelly from the starting XV.

I, like most others, was devastated at the performance and result in ballybofey. Really hoping that we can show up on Sunday and play with discipline, aggression and belief. Push up on kick outs and play early direct ball when we get the chance.

Team I would like to see would be something like:

Rafferty
P.Burns McKay Forker
McCabe Morgan Mackin
O.O'Neill J.Burns
Grugan R.O'Neill Campbell McQuillan
Nugent Turbitt

I would love to have seen more of higgins and O'Hanlon but it's hard to judge them given their lack of game time. Hopefully Murnin, shields and C.O"Neill get some action as well

Best of luck to everyone involved

Irrespective of the result - I just hope the boys do themselves justice and put in a performance that we can all be proud of. Also, that we don't get totally outfoxed on the sideline.
