All Ireland series

Many years ago, an Armagh stalwart, sadly no longer with us, once told me that in his vast experience, for some inexplicable reason Armagh teams tended to drop to the level of the opposition and play better against the stronger teams. This came into my mind standing in Athletic grounds last night, I thought there's a grain of truth somewhere in that :) as Armagh looked like they were the division 3 team. However, lucky or not, a win is a win and we'll take it and move on.
In 2002 we struggled, twice against Sligo, a good team but not one in the top half dozen, but raised our game enough to beat Dublin and Kerry. A similar variation in this group would be nice, if very improbable.

Can’t argue that was a poor performance, but looking how Derry performed yesterday the Ulster final obviously took a lot out of both teams. Another factor in the team’s performance in the last two games i.e. poor shot selection and decisions in general. I think is that in both games we went behind early on and spent the rest of the game chasing from behind.
Clearly the Ulster final took something out of the teams. However, I disagree about the start, I think that one problem yesterday was that in the first few minutes of the game Armagh looked like things were in control, and had we got an easy chance of the goal then they would have been. As a consequence, Armagh got into a somewhat relaxed frame of mind and couldn't step it up when required.

Jesus did anyone listen to Paddy Andrews before the game on commentary. He talks some rubbish and for murphy he never has anything good to say about about.
More or less said Armagh aren’t contenders for an all Ireland. Although, watching us last night do you blame him?

We need a massive performance next week. To be honest result doesn’t matter as such on saturday, but a reaction to the past 2 performance is what that group of players need.

Looking at the results and performances of the 8 provincial finalists, there is a case to be made that teams are safer going out early doors in the provincials. Let's face it, a Leinster or Munster championship means nothing to Dublin or Kerry and the chasing pack in their respective provinces are so far behind them. Definitely think a tweak is needed next year, provincial winners only to the all Ireland group stages. Rest based on league positions and the previous years Tailleant Cup winner.

The breaks have done no harm to Mayo etc who have come back refreshed.

Yesterday was as bad as I have ever seen us in the flesh. Poor kicking, sloppy hand passes,
But…
It’s a wake up call and good to get the bad performance out of system how, I fully believe we will be going to Omagh and coming back with a win, grinding a result out like that yday after being so poor should put them in good stead.

Are we the only team from the provincial finalists to have won in the first round games?

The level of detail and knowledge coupled with the passion within so many posts is what draws me and so many others to the forum and whats makes it so enjoyable.

Through the course of my years following Armagh there have been times where I haven't missed a game for years and others where I've struggled to make a few. A bit like the team; ups and downs. I have witnessed plenty of both but still try and consume every bit of Armagh that I can.

Despite how the team is playing or their success. I know in my own life that the more games I can get to the better things are for me personally.

Of course it's vital to the players on the field to see as much support as possible and this can also help us achieve.

Anyway onto the game.

I've been feeling a bit "meh" about things since the Ulster final to such a degree I haven't posted so I was expecting it to take its toll on the players even more so. Which it did.

On that basis we take the win and move on.

What worries me though are the things that haven't been addressed all year. Things that should be staples of our game.

The kickouts need sorted and that's not just an Ethan thing we need better movement. A go to possession securing one.

The system still asks so much of the players in transition unless we win the ball higher up the field - there were a couple of good examples of that yesterday towards the end which led to scores. I wonder what our running stats are compared to other teams?

We don't seem to tackle until it's last ditch. The middle third is given up so easily to the opposition.

It will be interesting to see how and when teams peak over the coming weeks.

The big positive is that it feels like we have more to come and will need little motivation for our next game. Quick turnaround so no time to dwell on the last game.

Anyway good to get the hangover game out of the way and definitely looking forward to the next one.

Have absolutely no issue with Andrews or Murphy’s comments after the match. Murphy praised Armagh’s style of play last year and both rightly wrote off the chances of Armagh doing much based on what they had seen on the day. Think it was fair enough.

The provincial series is on borrowed time in its current format / place in the calendar. Mayo for example were out early, took time off and then back at it. Armagh lost the ulster final and were back at it on the Monday night. No break or down time to get the head showered.

Will we be able to see highlights of our game on tomorrow's Sunday game. There were no highlights of Kerry/mayo and Galway/Tyrone last week. It is a disgrace there are no highlights of games shown on gaago. Gaago should be boycotted for this reason alone.
There was a Saturday game for this reason the past two weeks

I'm changing things slightly partly as a deflection, so:

Most on here that comment regular agree that Kerry and Dublin are the two big threats this year (I have and still disagree about one of them) but did anyone watch or see the Dublin v Roscommon game yesterday?? Holy (add whatever cus word you use) was it brutal. Roscommon were unbelievably boring and hard to watch and Dublin "mostly" had no answer to them. Only for the ref and some and some honestly blatant decisions against Roscommon, the dubs would have been beaten and beaten well. Although it ended in a draw it could have been a rerun of our game the previous evening. (I'm going to say it) Jesus football has gone to hell completely. It's win by any means or method. I'm going to switch over to the roundball game and follow some big team like Dollingstown Blues just for some excitement. I've got a taste for it from doing @PatMustard 's big competitions. Now Paddy Power, let me at it.

Couldnt have been too many! In fairness I thought the support was unreal the other day!
I thought support was great on Sat. Didnt notice anyone leaving-not saying this didn't happen, just I did not see many get up and go
Brilliant to hear support get behind the team and give a lift when not playing well

That keep ball approach is very frustrating. Westmeath used it very much to their advantage on Saturday night after getting that early lead-meant they were very awkward to play against. I think somebody earlier remarked that in second half, on two occasions when Westmeath had possession, they used up approx 12 to 15 minutes on the clock. That put a bit of rushed panic into our play and we were badly trying to force the issue to score quickly knowing that the clock was against us. They dropped to the floor a lot with 'injuries' managing to disrupt flow and any possible momentum. Lots of errors and uncertainty on our part, plus the fact that Westmeath gained possession fairly easily from their own kickout and hold onto the ball made it a very tricky night.

There have been few comments about McGeeney 'shaking hands' and seemingly having words with ref afterwards. Its not like McGeeney to make issue or complain about frees awarded or not awarded (although I could be wrong here). I wonder if that was about the ref not stopping play when a few of our players genuinely went down injured? As I mention above, play stopped quite a few times for Westmeath players that went down, but there were at least two occasions when I saw an Armagh player injured and needing attention with no stoppage-effectively leaving us with 14 players against a possession hogging team
