Armagh v Cavan - Ulster Semi-final and Replay

I'm not sure we can interpret those two pieces as saying we were too dumb to win. That's just a massive insult to the players and management and I know for certain that neither Aidan O'Rourke nor Jim McCorry will be doing that. To call everything that the players and or management did as brainless is again just insulting without adding anything positive.

I'd say and most would agree I think, it was a little bit of Championship naivety and inexperience for the most part, but as others have said including myself it's just an opinion exactly the same as yours and valid even if I don't agree. You make good points, but then insult just about everyone.

Take a look at what @bcb1 posts above. His points are clear and most times offer an alternative. I don't agree with all that he says, most of it, but not all, but it's easy to see where his heart lies and that's in wanting the team to win. Not just having a pop at those prepared to at stand up and be counted. They're each to a man, much better than I am or ever was.

Bit late to the party, but here's my ratings from Sunday.
Hughes - 5/6. Got blew up for taking too long. Maybe blame nobody moving? Didn't have much to do
Morgan - 6. My god, will this lad ever learn he cannot steamroll somebody from behind? liable for 3/4 scorable frees every game. Deserved to be subbed. Roasted by McVeety.
Shields - 6. Lost his going forward ability when Morgan was taken off. We need him to make those driving runs forward
Hughes - 8. Arguably our best player on Sun. Never stopped working and scored a good point. Back to his best
Kennedy - 7 - Solid again. Make good runs fwd and marked his man out of the game. Sure start for next game
Donaghy - 4. Stupid cowardly act at the end. Deserves his red. Embarrassing if Armagh appeal it. Gypsy act
Forker - 8. Marked OReilly out of it. His best game in long long time. A real leader.
JOB - 8.5. No review needed. Top class player again
Grimley - 6.5. Seemed to spend most of time chasing McKiernan around. Had opportunity to take points but recycled. Good to have 90mins under his belt after injury
Hall - 7. Gets a tough time from supportrs, asking what he actually contributes. Thought he played well. Took a good score
Grugan - 4. We not dropping him solely due to being captain? Rubbish again
Nugent - 7. A great find and prospect. Never stops working and seemingly always will chip in with a point or 2
Clarke - 5. We need to get him on the ball more. Very very quiet.
Oneill - 7. Never stopped trying to get on the ball, but had to come out very deep. Took some great scores.
Campbell - 5. Poor. again, had to keep coming deep. We need him driving fwd, like he done in ET getting fisted point.

Subs
Rafferty - 4. Took great mark, but that's it. Gave ball away and hooked shot way left. Quick sub. Doesn't look fit.
McElroy - 5. Sfored a great point when came on, but gave ball away lots. What was he thinking at end fist passing to sideline at very end? Go forward man.
Murnin - 4. Wasted sub. We didn't get the ball to him.
Rowland - 5. Didn't get on the ball much.
Crealey - 7. Id start him in replay. Another addition to MF. Caught few marks again.
Vernon - 6. Good and solid when came on. In for donaghy next week?

Questions??
1) McCabe & McKay not used at all, after playing league? Esp with ET???
2) Not good for Raffertys confidence if taken on then off not long after
3) why can we not hold onto a lead?????
4) Why no players with pace taken on in ET, to solely carry the ball against tiring cavan?

Team for replay

Hughes
Morgan
McKay
Hughes
Shields
Kennedy
Forker
JOB
Grimley
Crealey
Hall/Grugan
Nugent
Jamie
Rian
Campbell
You’d imagine McKay and McCabe must be injured especially since McKay started vs Down.

Adian O’Rourke along with a lot of other people reckons Andrew Murnin is one of the best players in the country at winning the ball played into him.I would imagine that’s one of the main reasons he’s selected for the Armagh panel . That being the case,I really don’t understand why he’s brought on and not a single ball is played into him.

And the one that went near him, (Grimleys attempt at a shot), he got a hand to when it looked a lost cause and would have made a goal chance if any of our other players had been awake.

Did Armagh not draw with Kildare?

He did give the 'ghost' penalty to Sligo in the league a few years ago !

I am watching the game, only a few minutes in but the build up for Burns missed goal chance was sweet.

Started off with Hughes' kick going slightly over Grimley's head. Cavan were unable to hold on to possession and Hall secures it. Sees the run Shields is making and offloads it. Shields runs on and dodges three Cavan players, passes it to Forker, Shields continued his run and Forker passes it over the Cavan defence. At that point Shields had the choice of two Armagh players who had a clear run at goal, passes it to Burns but the shot went wide.

Morgan's yellow card was not even for defending - Cavan were up near their own goal and the referee is called down the pitch to give him the yellow.

Remember it well, no-one had any idea at the time why it had been given!! Like most supporters I subsequently discovered it was for a jersey pull o_OI'm fairly certain I'm repeating myself in wondering how many other penalties have been given for this reason, I can't think of any.
Yet again it brings to the fore what managers, players & supporters call for time & time & time again from referees & match officials, consistency.

However no official (2 umpires standing in perfect view surely) managed to see the incident involving Shields who obviously felt he had received a swinging arm to the mouth/jaw as demonstrated to the referee.

Anyone see what Grugan done/said to management? Heard a lot of people saying he could be in trouble with his antics. Might not be the worst thing to be sidelined for a game and do some real soul searching as he’s not been himself this year at all.

Didn't see this but noticed E Rafferty having a few words with Paddy McK when coming off. Nothing wrong with being annoyed about coming off - it shows you care. That said, there's a line you don't cross which is that of respect for your management team. Both players were terrible on Sunday - I'm sure they know that themselves. Grugan out and Clarke on 40 for me next week! Hopefully Grugan and Rafferty (who's just not fully fit in my view) will find a bit of form for our final with Tyrone ;)

Hardly surprising. After the first free of the match McVeety ran past Morgan and ' tickled ' his ribs in front of umpire. It wasn't seen or maybe it was that Morgan didn't go crying about it.

About 55mins in Grimley is taken out with a high tackle going up for the ball. How many times did Cavan get away with high tackles? Then when the free was given to Armagh the Cavan #4 diving to try and get a free. Wasn't even touched and he fell over.

The Faulkner black card tackle looked a lot more cynical than the tackle Grugan made a few minutes later. Grugan was in front of him and committed to the tackle while the Cavan player went down a bit easy.

Nugent puts himself in some decent scoring positions but he seems way too eager to take the shot.

Whenever Hall ran forward it was always in to a dead end - two Cavan players were always there to shut him down. Having said that he is given no protection - he won a ball in MF and somehow Cavan were given a free.

Grugan when he had the ball didn't look confident. There was one time he had the ball, I think it was when Hughes was penalised for taking too long. Instead of attacking he went to run, stopped and turned back.

Grimley tackle where he went in with the foot. I can see why some would think it was a red and we are lucky his foot didn't go off in any other direction than for the ball. You can't penalise a player for that and it has to be based on perceived intention otherwise all players will be throwing themselves head first into 50/50 balls.

The Cavan defence won't get it easy with O'Neill, Clarke and Murnin in the replay. However, some of the Cavan players won't be having off days again either. Too many wrong decisions on the day and watching the game I have a feeling that Armagh will be better prepared for Cavan - but it depends on how our management shakes things up.

Yeah that's what I was saying in an earlier post. I thought it was just my perception.
